There is no doubt that we can’t speak about the blockchain ecosystem without speaking of the iconic face Vitalik Buterin.

A developer, a journalist, a publisher, a scholar, and a cryptocurrency creator, are some of many labels that can be given to Vitalik. He is considered as one of the most influential figures in the Blockchain ecosystem and even in the tech field. He has been involved with the crypto community for almost eight years now. He is the cofounder of Ethereum.

Vitalik was born on 24th January 1994 Russia. At the age of six, his parents emigrated to Canada in order to find better employment opportunities. During his third grade of elementary school, Buterin was placed into a class for gifted students. Remarkably, he had the ability to add three-digit numbers in his head twice as fast as the average of his peers. He admits that one of his favourite childhood toys was Microsoft Excel. This young genius attended the well ranked private school, Alberland School. According to him, this is where he learned how to think, and how to reason, thanks to the non-traditional education system. He was accepted at the University of Waterloo, Canada, by the age of nineteen. However, in less than two years, he dropped out in order to work on Ethereum full time.

At the age of seventeen, exactly 2011, Vitalik discovered the distributed ledger technology and Bitcoin. Amazed by the technology and the ideology, he co-founded, in the same year, one of today’s leading Blockchain magazines “Bitcoin Magazine”. In 2013, he traveled the world in order to investigate crypto projects and explore more cryptocurrencies, which led to the creation of Ethereum. Mainly, it is a decentralized mining network and software development platform that facilitates the creation of new digital currencies and programs. The benefit of this new decentralized platform that it is immutable, resilience to corruption, more secure, and it has zero downtime. Clearly, Ethereum is not just a cryptocurrency like Bitcoin, it is also a ledger technology that developers and companies are using to build new programs.

After the release of its white paper in late 2013, Ethereum was officially announced on the Bitcointalk forum in 2014. In his white paper, Buterin  argued that bitcoin needed a scripting language for application development. Failing to gain agreement, he proposed development of a new platform with a more general scripting language.  At the time of public announcement in January 2014, the core Ethereum team was mainly composed by Vitalik Buterin, Mihai Alisie, Anthony Di Iorio, and Charles Hoskinson. Through a Swiss company, Ethereum Switzerland GmbH (EthSuisse), formal development of the Ethereum software project began in early 2014. At the same time, a Swiss non-profit foundation was created as well, under the name “Stiftung Ethereum” (the Ethereum Foundation). The development was funded by an online public crowdsale during July–August 2014, with the participants buying the Ether and bitcoin.

Today, the young entrepreneur is considered as one of the most vibrant characters of the crypto community. In fact, he believes that he is the technology ambassador. His opinions and standing are enough to influence the entire markets. For instance, in June 2017, a death hoax started by forum 4chan circulated on the internet that Vitalik has been killed in a car accident. In three and a half hours, before quelling rumors of his death on Twitter, Ethereum’s price crashed from $300 to $260 USD. Obviously, this shows the importance of Vitalik Buterin in the Blockchain community. Literally, even his health has the power to affect markets.

After the success of Ethereum, many journalists and Blockchain non-adopters claimed that Vitalik Buterin is the destroyer of jobs. Ironically, he confirms that he is destroying “bad jobs” to create better ones. He sees himself as one of the creator of better world, a utopian one.

Despite his young age, the job destroyer was named to both the Forbes 30 under 30 and Fortune 40 under 40 lists. His net worth is estimated by more than a half to a between $100 and 200$ million. Lately, The New Yorker called him “indifferently rich,” because it is difficult to imagine a humbler or more unprepossessing centimillionaire.

His support along with his enthusiasm for crypto, confirms that he is a great supporter of decentralization. He mentions torrents as an example and explains how it has been free from the government censorship, as well as the absence of failure from the past 15 years due to the sole reason of its decentralization.

Vitalik has created a technology that ordinary people can use to opt out of the traditional financial system. As a consequence, he believes that if they then decide to opt out of Ethereum as well, he can never blame them.
