Known for his funny tweets about Ethereum, his debatable 65 opinions and his interest in building the largest decentralized blockchain ecosystem all over the globe… Today’s episode of the “iconic faces” series is about Justin Sun.
Born in July 1990, Justin Sun is a technology entrepreneur residing in San Francisco, California. He attended Peking University in 2017 where he studied History. For 3 years, Justin was always on the dean’s list. In addition, he was the President of the Association of Western Study, and most importantly a Peking University Student Union Presidential candidate. While he was an undergraduate student, he completed an exchange semester at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 2011, Justin Sun graduated from Peking University holding a Bachelor of Arts in History. Later, Sun started studying at the University of Pennsylvania from where he graduated in 2013 with a Master of Arts in Political Economy.
Justin Sun heard about Bitcoin in 2012. He invested a full year of college tuition in the cryptocurrency. As Bitcoin’s price skyrocketed, he cashed out and founded Peiwo. The app is a sort of China’s Snapchat. It matches and connects users through analyzing 10-second voice samples in addition to interests. Today, Peiwo is one of the largest voice live streaming apps in China.
Despite managing all the work of Peiwo as a CEO and a chairman, the interest for blockchain and cryptocurrencies did not vanish. In 2013, Justin joined Ripple. He was the first employee at Greater China area and has successively served as Ripple Labs’ Chief Representative in Greater China, Special Representative, and Advisor since 2014.
In 2017 Justin established the Tron Foundation, which claims it is “dedicated to building the infrastructure for a truly decentralized Internet.” (For more information about it check our weekly dive.). Moreover, just after the acquisition of BitTorrent made by TRON, Justin became officially its CEO. Clearly, Sun’s vision is currently focusing on making all his previous and acquired projects a part from TRON network.
Justin Sun is often presented as the next millennial Jack Ma. Actually, in April 2018 Sun graduated from Hupan University, a university for entrepreneurs founded by Jack Ma. To be clear, Hupan University is regarded as the hardest to enter university in history. However, Sun was the first millennial graduating from the university. During studying at Hupan University, he submitted a graduate thesis under the title “The Birth of Decentralized Internet”. This graduate thesis provided a detailed look into Sun’s thoughts on the past, present, and future of the blockchain industry. Furthermore, he also presented a thesis defense titled “Reflections and Thoughts on a Four-Year Journey as an Entrepreneur,” where he shared an extensive and in-depth analysis of his thoughts and lessons learned since he became an entrepreneur in 2014.
With a degree from Hupan University under his belt, Sun’s goal of expanding TRON’s global business became easier. TRON offices are already set up in San Francisco, Singapore, and Beijing, and new offices will be established around the world soon. Obviously, this will be helping in pushing more for technical development, building a robust foundation for TRON’s global community, and helping TRON form high-quality partnerships.
In both 2015 and 2017, Justin Sun has been ranked among Forbes China “30 under 30”. By the age of 26, Sun made the 2017 Forbes Asia “30 under 30” and was listed as one of the 30 outstanding business and industry figures, young innovators and disruptors under the age of 30, in the “Consumer Technology” category.
In October 2018, Justin Sun made around $3 million USD donation to Blockchain Charity Foundation that works on using“ blockchain for social good”.
